JEROME BURDI is an 800-hour certified Dharma Yoga teacher living in New York City. He teaches master and all levels classes at the NYC Dharma Yoga Center and also shares the teachings in yoga schools around the world. Jerome discovered yoga during a shamanic retreat in Brazil. Since then, he’s been enveloped in the path of a yogi. He left his job as a newspaper journalist to go to Rishikesh, India, and become a yoga teacher. Upon returning to NYC, he discovered Dharma Yoga and has been hooked ever since. Though Jerome grew up in NY, he had to go to India to come back and see Sri Dharma Mittra with clear eyes and to hear the truth that is Dharma Yoga. Jerome’s mission is to spread his guru’s teachings. He is also a holistic nutritionist and a drummer in the Dharma Yoga Kirtan Band. His website is Omjerome.com.
DHARMA YOGA: Dharma Yoga is classic Hatha-Raja Yoga as taught by yoga master Sri Dharma Mittra, who has been spreading the teachings in New York City for 50 years. Sri Dharma, 77, is well known for his Master Chart of 908 Asanas that is in yoga schools around the world.
Saturday, Feb. 18 (AM: 3-hours: 10.00 - 13.00):
Maha Sadhana, a complete and eternal practice
This practice is known as the best that Dharma Yoga has to offer. Learn the ancient yoga techniques through a modern perspective as taught for decades by master yogi Sri Dharma Mittra. The workshop will include kirtan, pranayama, meditation, and asana poses in an all levels practice that will focus on inversions, hip openers and backbends. The sadhana will make the body healthy, strong, and flexible and lead students to quiet the mind, build endurance and overcome fears. Included at the end is a wonderful way to relax the body and mind called yoga nidra. It's an active meditation guided by the teacher, a perfect way to end the asana practice. It's said that 30 minutes of yoga nidra is as good as three hours sleep. Then comes an amazing asana jam! We set up a few mats in the center to offer up poses as everyone sits around them in a circle, singing devotional songs. Students can offer up anything they'd like for world peace, even a shavasana pose.
Arm balance/inversion workshop (PM: 2 hours: 15.00-17.00):
Arm balances and inversions are some of the most challenging and fun aspects of the asana practice. They require lots of work, dedication, and determination. Over time, they will come and add a little magic to your life and practice.
Be willing to play. This will bring you back into a childlike state and bring instant joy, whether the pose is achieved or not. Eventually it will be. Just practice with all your heart and everything will come to you in just the right moment. In this, there is no doubt. Working towards these poses can change your life and help improve your concentration and self-confidence. Come play!
Sunday, Feb. 19 (AM: 2 hours: 10.00-12.00):
Maha Shakti, all levels asana class
In this all levels class several aspects of the yoga practice will be offered including pranayama, kirtan, yoga nidra relaxation and asana poses ranging from basic to challenging. Students will be exposed to a well rounded practice in the classic Hatha-Raja Yoga tradition. It's sure not to be missed! It will also be a great way to wind down after all of the practices on Saturday.
Yoga Nidra (AM:1 hour: 12.00-13.00)
Relaxation is the best antidote for impurities. Yoga nidra is an active meditation where the practitioner is led to complete relaxation while in savasana pose.
It is said that an hour of yoga nidra can be as restorative as a full night's rest. Through the active meditation of yoga nidra, one will dispel tension and fatigue and end up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
Yoga nidra gives one the opportunity to move away from physical awareness so the mind and body can rest. The effects of the practice are increased energy and feelings of peace and bliss afterward.
